How to Manually Add Non-Students to your Canvas Course
Note: This is for adding non-students only. Official student enrollment is controlled by Banner, and thus instructors should under no circumstance try to manually enroll students using a different role. If you are experiencing an issue with fully enrolled students not being able to access your course please contact the Mt. SAC help desk.
Adding Users to your Course(s)
This is intended for those looking to manually enroll somebody into their Mt. SAC course using a role other than "student". These roles may include "Tutor", "non-grading TA", "Observer", or "Teacher", just to name a few.
Adding other "Teachers": If you wish to share materials with other Mt. SAC instructors consider adding them to a sandbox and not your official CRN course so that you do not share your student enrollment information or risk others changing your course or materials. There is also easier ways to share individual course materials, such as announcements, assignments, discussions, pages, and quizzes with other Mt. SAC instructors if you prefer that.
To enroll somebody into your Canvas course follow these steps:
- Click on "People" from the course navigation menu
- Click on the blue "+People" button
- You can add a user using any of the 3 methods (Email, Login ID, SIS ID), if one doesn't work try the other options. If none it is because the user doesn't exist in our Canvas instance and thus cannot be added to any course.
-
Login ID is the same as their Email address minus the "@mtsac.edu" part.
-
SIS IDis the user's Mt. SAC A-number
-
Note: only people with a Mt. SAC email address can be added into Mt. SAC Canvas courses
- Select the appropriate role you wish for this user to have in this course.
- Click "Next", and then finally "Add Users"
The recently added user will receive an email containing an invitation to join the course. An invite link will also appear at the top of that user's Canvas dashboard. If you encounter problems with any of these steps please contact the Mt. SAC help desk.
